The second week of 2025 offers a perfect blend of operatic power and traditional New Year music, setting the frame for the year's first major classical experiences. Det Kongelige Teater opens the opera season with Puccini's Tosca in Kasper Holten's new staging, in which the relationship between art and politics is explored through the composer's masterly drama. It marks a significant return to Puccini for the former head of opera.

DR Koncerthuset presents Gardner & Szeps-Znaider with DR SymfoniOrkestret in a programme that includes Bruch's intense Violin Concerto – a work that unites full-blooded romanticism with folk-music-inspired power from the dramatic opening to the energetic finale. The established combination of conductor and soloist promises quality of the highest order.

New Year repertoire dominates the weekend with several notable concerts. Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester tours its Viennese programme through Kolding, Tønder, Sønderborg and Horsens, while Copenhagen Phil presents classic New Year favourites by Lehár and the Strauss family at various Zealand venues. Odense Symfoniorkester continues its tradition of festive New Year concerts in Carl Nielsen Salen.

The wind quintet V Coloris offers a modern take on the New Year celebration with their YAY! concept in both Brøndby and Frederiksberg, while the foyer at Operaen opens for relaxed opera-bar experiences with talented students from Operaakademiet.

A special gem is found in Gl. Holte Kirke, where the cello star Andreas Brantelid, now a professor at Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium, performs with an outstanding baritone in festive surroundings.

Danmarks Underholdningsorkester ends the week with an ambitious programme of Mozart, Monteverdi and Handel in Konservatoriets Koncertsal – a concert that serves as a prelude to their historic appearance at the Mozartwoche in Salzburg later in the year.

The week demonstrates the breadth and quality of Danish musical life, with both the major institutions and smaller but significant events, together laying the foundation for a strong classical year.
