It has been so since the establishment of the diocese in 1922. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, who, especially in earlier times, was also called Our Lady (Vor Frue). There has been a church on the site since the 12th century, but the church building has burned down and been rebuilt several times. Three times it has burned down to the ground and been replaced by a new building. The present church was built at the beginning of the 19th century in the Neoclassical style.
