Beethoven x 3

David Grimal

Description

Programme Ludwig van Beethoven, (1770–1827) Overture to "The Creatures of Prometheus", Op. 43 (1800–01) Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61 (1806) – Allegro ma non troppo – Larghetto – Rondo INTERVAL Symphony No. 7, Op. 92 (1811–12) – Poco sostenuto - Vivace – Allegretto – Presto – Allegro con brio Tonight's concert is an all-Beethoven programme, as David Grimal returns for the first of two concerts this season as director and soloist. Playing without a conductor challenges a large orchestra to listen closely and play as one, tonight in two works we look forward to sharing with the audience: Beethoven's lovely Violin Concerto and his mighty Symphony No. 7. Beethoven's only violin concerto is neither heroic, dramatic nor especially virtuosic, yet it is both grand and modest, and very, very beautiful. Beethoven's seventh is also one of his most cheerful works, more rustic in expression and known for its rhythmic energy and vitality. The captivating second movement is perhaps the movement, of all his symphonies, that has made the greatest impression on listeners. Beethoven's overture to the ballet The Creatures of Prometheus is a grandiose portrayal of the god who, according to myth, stole fire from the gods, and of the jubilant joy and worship of humankind. Beethoven 200 years on: An immortal musical legacy Ludwig van Beethoven is perhaps the most influential composer in classical music. He helped usher in the Romantic era and set off a musical revolution. In 2027 it will be two hundred years since he died. We are celebrating with no fewer than four concerts of Beethoven this season. Two concerts remain. Enjoy!
