BIT20
BIT20 is one of the Nordic region's leading ensembles in contemporary music. It has existed since 1989, and was born out of a need to give contemporary music a lift in Bergen and Norway, and quickly became a spearhead nationally and internationally. With a passion for new music and fantastic instrumentalists, BIT20 has travelled with its repertoire – from acclaimed festivals and venues in Europe to more exotic places in Russia, Vietnam, Egypt and Canada, among others. But the ensemble is also concerned with its local roots, and in recent years has worked a great deal in Bergen and with the local audience. The ensemble has functioned as a tradition-bearer of 20th-century art music, but also as a springboard for new music by living composers, both at home and abroad. They have taken particular responsibility for new Norwegian music, and have commissioned and given the first performance of about a hundred works, and recorded and participated in 26 CDs. There are 16 permanent musicians in the ensemble, and most of them are section leaders or alternating section leaders in the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. The ensemble functions as musicians on stage, but also works with the participant projects, as performers and inspirers. One aim of BIT20 is to open up the concert form, invite in the audience, and help them find their way into a complex and challenging artistic expression, regardless of age and background.
