Nidarosdomen, or Nidaros domkirke, is Saint Olav's burial church, pilgrimage destination, coronation church - and Norway's national sanctuary. Nidarosdomen is the world's northernmost Gothic cathedral. The cathedral is built over the grave of Saint Olav, the Viking king who Christianised Norway and became the eternal king of the whole country. Nidarosdomen was begun in 1070 and stood complete in all its splendour around the year 1300. The cathedral was struck by several fires in the Middle Ages and lay partly in ruins from the Reformation until the end of the 1800s. Nidaros Domkirkes Restaureringsarbeider (NDR) was then established to restore the cathedral as a national symbol. The restoration of Nidarosdomen was officially concluded in 2000, but 23 craftsmen at NDR still work on the restoration and maintenance of the cathedral.
