Carmen - Den Jyske Opera
Description
Today Georges Bizet's opera Carmen is one of the most popular and most frequently performed operas in the world, but at its premiere in Paris in 1875 it was not exactly given a warm reception. The wild Carmen and the socially realistic story did not suit the taste of the Parisian bourgeoisie, and many also found the music, with the Spanish dance rhythms Bizet brought into the orchestral music, too foreign. Even the musicians grumbled loudly during rehearsals about the incomprehensible music, which some accused of being entirely without melody. One can certainly smile at that today, when many can hum along to the toreador aria and Carmen's Habañera. Now Den Jyske Opera is sending the production on tour, and although the drama ends tragically, the audience can expect a gripping evening with great opera hits, fantastic music with big choral scenes and a gripping drama. The plot Sergeant Don José falls in love with the petty criminal Carmen, whom he is guarding after a knife fight. She persuades him to let her go, and he does, even though it will be the end of his career in the forces of order. Don José joins Carmen and a travelling band of outlaws, even though she repeatedly makes it clear that a relationship between them is not possible. Carmen falls in love with the bullfighter Escamillo and leaves with him. Don José realises that his life lies in ruins because of Carmen: he has abandoned his fiancée, his family and his job – and is now left rejected and humiliated. In blind rage he pursues Carmen. Well aware that it will end in death, Carmen sees it as her destiny to try to talk the dangerous and broken Don José round. In a tragic climax, Don José kills Carmen in a fit of jealousy. Carmen is sung in Danish with Danish surtitles.
