BLEUSE & MAHLER'S 5TH – WITH OS AND COPENHAGEN PHIL
Dirigent: Pierre Bleuse
Description
Look forward to the delightful rush of anticipation that will invariably seize you when the solo trumpet enters with the fanfare that launches Mahler's gigantic Symphony No. 5! The enormous work, written in an unusually happy period of the composer's life in 1901-02, includes, among other things, Mahler's most famous composition: the heart-breakingly beautiful and almost unbearably elegiac Adagietto for strings and solo harp in the fourth movement. This movement is said to be Mahler's love song to his wife Alma, whom he had met while working on the symphony. And thanks, among other things, to the music's prominent appearance in the film classic Death in Venice, Mahler's Fifth has gone down in history as one of the greatest masterpieces of the tormented late Romantic. As a bonus we shall hear Richard Strauss's tragic string work Metamorphosen, written during the last and darkest months of World War 2. A work that fully demonstrates how music can portray, but also soothe, even the most desperate grief. The concert is played in collaboration with Copenhagen Phil and will be a heartfelt welcome back for our honorary guest conductor Pierre Bleuse. Programme: R. Strauss: Metamorphosen Mahler: Symphony No. 5
