Musikforeningen Cæcilia
Vordingborg
Musikforeningen Cæcilia wishes to promote knowledge of and joy in classical music, including newer music.
Saint Cecilia, as she is also called, is the patron saint of music. She is commemorated every year on St Cecilia's Day on 22 November. Saint Cecilia's connection with music is somewhat uncertain and may be due to someone once having misread!
Saint Cecilia died as a martyr in Sicily around the year 176, and was buried several hundred years later in the church of Santa Cecilia in Rome, where her relics are still found. But it is only around 1570 that we hear of the first musical performances in her honour. Since then many composers have written music for Saint Cecilia. Among the best-known works are Purcell's Ode for St. Cecilia's Day from 1692 and Britten's Hymn to St. Cecilia from 1942.
