Halvcirkel
Halvcirkel is a Danish string trio founded in Copenhagen in 2015, consisting of the violist Mika Persdotter, the violinist Bettina Marie Ezaki and the cellist Nicole Hogstrand.
In 2024 Halvcirkel signed a contract with FatCat Records’ modern classical label 130701 to release their first album of entirely original compositions, called Vida. The album highlights the group's creative development and includes techniques such as col legno and pizzicato to create sound portraits of Nordic landscapes that evoke the wild beauty of Iceland, Sweden and Denmark. The compositions on Vida reflect the influence of key figures in modern classical and post-classical music such as Brian Eno, Craig Leon, Carl Nielsen, Arvo Pärt and Terry Riley.
Their philosophy is that an ensemble is never separate from its surroundings, but always part of something larger. Their sound is marked by the intricate interplay between their instruments, which merge to create a dynamic musical dialogue driven by contrast, tension and release.
Halvcirkel's work is as diverse as their artistic philosophy. They have rethought works by composers such as Dmitri Shostakovich and Philip Glass, collaborated with artists across musical disciplines, including Henrik Lindstrand, Signe Lykke and Hania Rani, and taken on special commissions such as their collaboration with Statens Museum for Kunst in 2023. Their work with the composer Anders Lauge Meldgaard on a reinterpretation of the ancient Greek poet Sappho's Fragment 94 reflects their interest in working across the spectrum of the arts.
With a comprehensive creative vision and a commitment to musical dialogue, Halvcirkel continues to challenge the boundaries of what a string trio can be. Their work represents a modern view of classical music that balances tradition with experimentation and invites listeners into a world of rich textures and artistic exploration.
