The motivation is to bring a cultural collaboration between the Nordic countries out into the public eye, revitalise classical opera and create new, relevant and debate-provoking stories on the basis of Nordic values. We strive for closeness and authenticity, and for the courage to unite the highest artistic ideals with broad audience appeal. Our organisation and productions relate to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and thus focus on diversity, climate, equality, inequality, peace and justice. Over the years NordicOpera has been supported by the Danish Arts Foundation (Statens Kunstfond), the Nordic Culture Fund (Nordisk Kulturfond) and a large number of private foundations, and our productions have also won several prizes. In 2014 we produced DET DYBESTE STED by Daniel Hjorth in collaboration with the Swedish group Freebird Malmö. Besides receiving a great many fine reviews, it was also among the 18 out of 340 nominated productions selected to play at the Swedish Scenkonstbiennalen in May 2015, where Sveriges Radio was also present and recorded the opera for broadcast on 7 November 2015 at 19.00 on P2. NordicOpera's production 'Hamlet in Absentia', which had its world premiere during the international Shakespeare festival at Kronborg, was nominated for a Reumert in 2017 in the category Opera of the Year. The production won 2 Reumert prizes: Dramatist of the Year (Jakob Weis) and a talent prize to the soprano Sibylle Glosted for the role of Ophelia. Composer Hugi Gudmundsson received The Icelandic Music Award for the music for 'Hamlet in Absentia', and the opera has also been nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize 2018.
