Musikhuset Aarhus - Store Sal
Thomas Jensens Allé 2, 8000 Aarhus
Store Sal is the heart of Musikhuset Aarhus and the focal point for performances by world stars in every genre. With room for up to 1.600 guests, Store Sal provides the setting for every kind of performance, from classical ballets and opera to rhythmic concerts, musicals and major international guest productions. The hall is built as an auditorium and is also well suited to, for example, shareholder meetings, talks, general meetings and other large corporate events.
There are 1.588 seats, including 96 chairs in the retractable orchestra pit. The orchestra pit was enlarged in 1998 for Den Jyske Opera's production of Elektra and is the largest in Northern Europe. Store Sal also has 16 wheelchair spaces.
Rebuilding 2010-2014
In the autumn of 2010, Musikhuset Aarhus received a donation of 10 million kr. from Købmand Herman Sallings Fond for the rebuilding of Store Sal. The work took place in the summer of 2011, so that the hall today appears in new, contemporary colours and with new upholstery on the seats. At the same time, the ventilation in Store Sal and Lille Sal has been replaced.
The Nordea Foundation has contributed 2.5 million kr. towards a new sound system in Store Sal. The system was inaugurated on 30 April 2012 and means that audiences now experience a far more clearly defined and detailed soundscape, with an honest and uncoloured interpretation of the musicians' work. The old sound system dated from 1989.
