Description

The collaboration between the music conservatoire and Arktisk Filharmoni has a long tradition and is an important partnership for both institutions. Here students and professionals sit side by side as we dive into several highlights of the classical orchestral repertoire. At this year's concert you will hear works by composers who each in their own way fought a battle for freedom and identity. From a time when many had to keep their private lives hidden, their stories have been of great importance to posterity. The concert opens with music by Pauline Hall, a queer pioneer in Norwegian musical life. We also hear Ravel's playful and lightning-fast piano concerto, and Sibelius's and Shostakovich's iconic works as symbols of the struggle for one's own identity and freedom. Kalle Kuusava studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and later at Norges Musikkhøgskole in Oslo. He has won several international conducting competitions. In recent years he has made a name for himself in Scandinavia as both an orchestral and opera conductor, in addition to guest conducting orchestras in both Asia and New York. Since 2025 Kalle has been employed as repetiteur, conductor and teacher of ensemble leadership at Musikkonservatoriet, UiT. The pianist Sanne Suh Berger began playing the piano at the age of 5 with the teacher Dann Karlsen and is today a master's student at Musikkonservatoriet in Tromsø with Professor Sergej Osadchuk. This concert is part of the programme of Arctic Pride 2026. The concert is a collaboration between Arktisk Filharmoni and Musikkonservatoriet, UiT Norges arktiske universitet. The project is supported by Sparebankstiftelsen and Nordplus. Programme: Pauline Hall / Verlaine Suite (1st movement - introduction) Jean Sibelius / Finlandia Maurice Ravel / Piano Concerto in G major, M. 83 Dmitri Shostakovich / Symphony No. 5 Interval after Ravel.
