Description
Denmark's national opera. Carl Nielsen's Maskarade from 1906, based on Ludvig Holberg's comedy from 1724, is regarded as Denmark's national opera. The comic opera leaps humorously and affectionately into the generation gap and is about different worldviews colliding. The old order of calm, cleanliness and propriety is challenged by the will of youth to do things differently. The artistic team behind it - director Melker Sörensen, set designer Franciska Zahle and lighting designer Súni Joensen - opens the doors to a universe that is both beautiful and playful, where the masks gradually have to fall, and the struggle to live and love freely plays out. Maskarade is sung in Danish with Danish surtitles. Synopsis: The young couple, Leander and Leonora, have been promised to each other in an arranged marriage agreed by their fathers Jeronimus and Leonard. One evening the two young people each go to a masquerade separately, and in the course of the evening they both fall in love with a masked stranger. In secret the young people sneak out to meet their newfound love, and as in a true comedy of errors, it turns out that it was Leander and Leonora who were hiding behind each mask.
