STRAVINSKY & BEETHOVEN'S 7TH
Dirigent: Brad Lubman
,Andreas Brantelid, cello
Description
This evening we meet the Danish/Swedish cello phenomenon Andreas Brantelid at the head of a brand-new cello concerto, written specifically for him by the young Danish composer Rune Glerup. The concerto is titled On What Disappears and is about the transience of everything - and the longing to be able to hold on, whether to a departed loved one, a dear memory, or notes in the music. As a prelude we will hear Stravinsky's sparkling, neoclassical chamber concerto Dumbarton Oaks, named after the historic residence in Washington, D.C., where a diplomatic couple celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in 1938. And as the evening's culmination, the concert truly turns to commemoration as we honour Beethoven with one of his most popular works, both in his own time, in Beethoven's own mind, and in our posterity: the great, all-embracing 7th Symphony. At the premiere in 1813 the symphony was such a success that the audience demanded the moving 2nd movement be repeated on the spot. Beethoven gesticulated wildly and jumped up and down. One of the most dramatic masterpieces of his career had seen the light of day. And ever since, the seventh has enjoyed massive and uninterrupted popularity all over the world.
