Description

Driving, relentless rhythms take centre stage with Glass, while Stravinskij puts war on stage and Roussel unfolds the musical landscape in all the colours of the rainbow. “Glass's concerto for two timpani is music you feel before you understand it. And you don't need to be a timpani nerd to be gripped - just curious. The pulse does the rest. This will be a concert you can feel right down in your stomach. And I look forward to every single beat.” - Nikolai Petersen, timpani Symphony in Three Movements is cinematic music with rhythm at its centre. Stravinskij himself called it his ”war symphony”; a direct response to World War 2, written in the light of the despair and hope of the war - and the relief at its end. In Glass's concerto for two timpani and orchestra, we move the timpanists to the front row. It is just as cinematic as Stravinskij's symphony and extremely entertaining - full of energetic, driving rhythms and a teasingly fierce orchestral accompaniment. Roussel's Third Symphony is grand, vividly pictorial music in which all the orchestra's expressive means are brought into play: a masterpiece in the generous use of the orchestra's entire palette of colours. Programme: Igor Stravinskij / Symphony in Three Movements Philip Glass / Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra Albert Roussel / Symphony No. 3
