Saraste & Brahms

Description

When the composer Claude Debussy died in 1918, Stravinsky sat down at the piano and improvised a slow series of solemn chords. It became the first seed of the composer's Symphonies of Wind Instruments - a series of mosaic-like movements, played by colourful wind instruments, which gradually move towards the original chorale. It is music carried by a cleansing energy. Where Stravinsky's wind figures seem refreshingly clear and cool, Brahms is ready to warm up the Concert Hall. First Jukka-Pekka Saraste conducts the second of the composer's serenades, in which the true Brahms steps forward in all his melodic warmth, spirit and rhythmic elegance. With Symphony No. 2, Brahms knew exactly how to capture the emotions while at the same time delivering a superbly structured symphonic progression. No other work by Brahms combines the sunshine and clouds of life in quite the same way - and yet the symphony works its way towards one of the most captivating endings in music history.
