Blomstedt & Bruckner
Dirigent: Herbert Blomstedt
Description
Something special happens every time Herbert Blomstedt returns to the orchestra he first conducted in 1955 - not least when he brings Anton Bruckner's music with him. No composer manages like Bruckner to connect the human with the spiritual, and no conductor can match Blomstedt's experience in unleashing the power and dynamics of the music. Bruckner regarded Symphony No. 6 as his boldest work - a shorter, brighter and more rhythmically alive work than its sister symphonies, often described as his Cinderella symphony. Here the composer's legendary Gothic structures take on a special elegance - calm, tender, sublime and noble. The concert opens with music that also comes from Austria, but is inspired by London. When Haydn visited the English capital in the 1790s, he was received as the greatest musician in the world. His gift to Londoners was a series of symphonies, the last of which bears the name London - a work of immense charisma, humour and immediacy, created with the simple purpose of delighting and entertaining. Programme: Haydn / Symphony No. 104, London Bruckner / Symphony No. 6
