Luisi & Mozart

Description

There is a straight line from Mozart's genius to Schönberg's musical courage, and for chief conductor Fabio Luisi the two are closely connected. In Vienna in 1788 audiences heard Mozart's last symphony for the first time – an unbroken and meticulous stream of musical effervescence, bubbling with joy and inventiveness despite its advanced design. The influence on Schönberg is obvious, and the effect at a live concert is electric. Fabio Luisi's odyssey through the music of Arnold Schönberg, one of the twentieth century's most important artistic personalities, arrives with this concert at two works in which the musical language feels both strange and familiar. Schönberg may have left Vienna, but Vienna never left Schönberg. The spirit of the city permeates the composer's piano concerto, written in California in 1942, but with the incorporation of an unmistakable Viennese waltz. The work has been compared to "a good private conversation … lyrical and witty". As in his Chamber Symphony No. 2, which came into being over a period of 32 years, Schönberg's piano concerto shows that modernist logic can be combined with late-Romantic passion – and that one sometimes has to look back in order to look forward. The first two works of the evening will be part of DR Symfoniorkestret's recording of Schönberg's orchestral works for the record label Deutsche Grammophon.
