Århus Sinfonietta strives to perform music that understands its past, plays its present and develops its future. In 2020 Århus Sinfonietta celebrates its 30th anniversary as a central Danish communicator of modern composed music by presenting an ambitious anniversary season with unique concert projects featuring broad genre diversity, improved gender diversity, a focus on local and regional roots and collaboration, and an increased focus on audience development, mentorship and talent development. Århus Sinfonietta was founded in 1990 by a group of musicians from Aarhus Symfoniorkester and Det Jyske Ensemble in collaboration with the composer Hans Abrahamsen, and today consists of 19 permanent musicians. Since its founding, Århus Sinfonietta has had the following artistic directors: Hans Abrahamsen, Niels Marthinsen, Erik Kaltoft and Hjarne Fessel. In 2018 Århus Sinfonietta appointed the composer Allan Gravgaard Madsen as artistic director, and the endeavour to communicate modern composed music in contemporary and innovative concert concepts thus remains the ensemble's foremost task.
