Henschel Kvartetten
“This is, no question, one of the best groups in the world, a great string quartet.” (Los Angeles Times).
“The Henschel Quartet is being awarded the Orlando prize for music for one of the highest artistic reaches in the overall musical history of the Dubrovnik Festival”
Jury announcement, August 2015
In 1995 the Quartet won several prizes at international competitions in Evian, Banff and Salzburg, and the following year 1st Prize and the Gold Medal at the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. Successful debut concerts in the world's leading musical metropolises, including a much-praised live BBC concert in which the Henschel Quartet stepped in for the Juilliard Quartet, took the Quartet into the absolute premier league of chamber music. “This is, no question, one of the best groups in the world, a great string quartet.” (Los Angeles Times).
The Quartet's musical journey includes many remarkable highlights. The Henschel Quartett played at the official reopening of the Anna Amalia Library in Weimar (on UNESCO's World Heritage List) and travelled to Brussels as Cultural Ambassador for Germany. In March 2010 the quartet had the privilege of performing in the Vatican in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI.
The Quartet is regularly invited to the Palacio Real in Madrid to play the four Stradivarius instruments of the royal collection. In June 2012 the Henschel Quartet was invited, as the first European quartet in twenty years, to perform all of Beethoven's string quartets at the prestigious Suntory Hall in Tokyo.
Highlights of recent seasons include concerts in London, Amsterdam, Munich, Yokohama and Tokyo, a major tour of Latin America and – for the second time – a tour with the star cellist, sadly now deceased, Lynn Harrell, with Schubert's great C major Quintet on the programme.
The Henschel Quartet's recordings have been honoured with many prizes, including the ”Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik” and several ”CD of the Year Awards” (IMW). The Quartet's many CDs have received outstanding reviews in prominent media such as The Gramophone Magazine, the Sunday Times and Süddeutsche Zeitung. A CD with works by Christopher Theofanidis is being released.
The Henschel Quartet regularly receives invitations to teach at the world's leading educational institutions such as Yale University in the USA, the Royal Northern College of Music in England and the University of Melbourne in Australia. The Quartet is also engaged in an ongoing dialogue with the Bavarian Ministry of Culture about talent-pipeline projects in the Quartet's home city, Munich.
