Aalborg Symfoniorkester was founded in 1943 by the conductor Jens Schrøder (chief conductor until 1979) and today consists of 65 full-time musicians. The orchestra is based on the harbour front in Aalborg, in the award-winning concert hall in Musikkens Hus, one of the largest and most prominent cultural venues in Region Nordjylland. The core of the orchestra's work is the symphonic Thursday concerts with Danish and international soloists and conductors. In addition, the orchestra plays an important role as opera and ballet orchestra for performances with Det Kongelige Teater and Den Jyske Opera, just as it does for film screenings and cross-over concerts with soloists from other musical genres. Aalborg Symfoniorkester has an extensive programme for children and young people, partly in the form of family concerts for audiences aged 0-99, and partly in the form of educational projects at schools, in day-care institutions and at venues throughout North Jutland. Chief conductors since Jens Schrøder have been Janos Fürst (1980-1983), Peter Erös (1983-1989), Owain Arwel Hughes (1995-1999), Moshe Atzmon (1999-2002), Matthias Aeschbacher (2005-2011), Rumon Gamba (2011-2015), and since 2023 Joshua Weilerstein. The prominent Danish conductor Michael Schønwandt has had a long association with the orchestra and is today honorary conductor. Over the years Aalborg Symfoniorkester has appeared with many world-famous artists such as Jean-Pierre Rampal, Victor Borge, Birgit Nilsson, Yehudi Menuhin, Anne-Sophie Mutter, José Carreras, Kiri Te Kanawa, Jonas Kaufmann, Janine Jansen, Placido Domingo, Anna Netrebko, Sir Bryn Terfel and Evgeny Kissin. The orchestra has made numerous recordings, mainly of Danish music.
