ARS NOVA Copenhagen
ARS NOVA Copenhagen was founded in 1979 and has long since established itself as one of the finest vocal ensembles in the world. The ensemble's chief conductor and artistic director since 2003 has been the acclaimed English conductor Paul Hillier. The ensemble has specialised in interpreting the polyphonic choral music of the Renaissance and new vocal music, performed with precision and nerve and with a sound that attracts attention all over the world – and over the years it has toured in more than 35 countries. With an annual concert season in Copenhagen and Århus, numerous concerts elsewhere in Denmark and recurring tours around the world, the group is today more in demand than ever. In 2019 Ars Nova visited, among other places, the Orkney Islands, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany and Italy. In 2020 the ensemble will visit large parts of Denmark with a series of concerts marking the centenary of the reunification, and late in the year it heads to the USA, Canada and Hong Kong with the newly written staged work A Book of Mountains and Seas, with music by the Chinese-American composer Huang Ruo.
Ars Nova has recorded a long list of CDs that have won numerous prizes, including a Grammy for The Little Match Girl Passion with music by David Lang (with Theatre of Voices on Harmonia Mundi). The most recent releases are First Drop (Cantaloupe) from April 2017 with works by, among others, David Lang, Michael Gordon, Louis Andriessen, Steve Reich, Terry Riley and Howard Skempton, and Crossing Borders (Dacapo) with music by Carl Nielsen, Niels W. Gade, Vagn Holmboe, Wilhelm Stenhammer and Line Tjørnhøj. Both CDs have received top reviews in the press.
