Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester
Bergen Filharmoniske Orkester has the status of national orchestra and, as one of the world's oldest orchestras, can trace its history all the way back to 1765. Edvard Grieg was closely associated with the orchestra, and was its artistic director in the years 1880-82. Edward Gardner is now chief conductor. The orchestra has 101 musicians and celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2015. The orchestra enjoys high international standing thanks to tours, recordings, the streaming service BergenPhiLive and international commissioned works.
Over recent seasons the orchestra has played at the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, the Wiener Musikverein and Konzerthaus, Carnegie Hall, New York, and the Philharmonie and Konzerthaus Berlin. In 2017 the orchestra and participating choirs had great success at the Edinburgh International Festival with a critically acclaimed production of Peter Grimes. In 2018 the orchestra again visited the Concertgebouw and the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, and played as the first Scandinavian orchestra at Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie. In January 2019 the orchestra had a residency in Salzburg with three concerts.
