Musica Ficta
Musica Ficta is a professional vocal ensemble, formed in 1996 by the composer and conductor Bo Holten. Here he has realised his vision of a flexible, project-based ensemble in which virtuoso ensemble singing in all its forms is at the centre.
Musica Ficta embraces a very broad repertoire. The ensemble's speciality, however, is the music of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, when composers wrote their great works not for symphony orchestras but for the human voice. Musica Ficta's artistic director and conductor, Bo Holten, is among the world's leading figures in this field.
In recent years Bo Holten's interest has revolved especially around the extreme Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo (1566 – 1613), whose atonal and dissonant madrigals have become a recurring and highly acclaimed part of Musica Ficta's repertoire.
Musica Ficta also regards its work with the Danish song heritage as a central part of its activities. The CDs of Danish songs have made Musica Ficta Denmark's best-selling classical ensemble, and every year the ensemble tours the country to spread and maintain knowledge of both the well-known and the lesser-known corners of the Danish song heritage.
In Musica Ficta even the smallest project is an occasion for deep immersion. With Bo Holten's profound knowledge of European music and cultural history, every concert is carried out within a particular thematic perspective. Each concert is a journey into a time, an era or an artistic personality.
In a world of mainstream, we want to keep introducing the best of the overlooked and the rare. The aim is especially to introduce new corners of the world of vocal music, including ones overlooked here at home.
Musica Ficta consists of a core group of 12 of Denmark's best ensemble singers, but it is always the individual assignments that determine the size of the ensemble and the combination of voices. In this way you can experience Musica Ficta in anything from three female voices to a Baroque line-up of 16 singers.
The term "Musica Ficta" refers to the practice in early music in which the singers themselves insert unwritten accidentals into the part. From our perspective it draws attention to the fact that the musical work is ultimately created by the performers themselves – and that it reaches beyond what is written down.
