Randers Kammerorkester is Denmark's only permanent professional chamber orchestra. Each year the orchestra plays around 110 concerts, including orchestral and chamber concerts in Randers and the rest of Denmark, castle concerts, school concerts, children's concerts and opera performances. Together with regular broadcasts on Danmarks Radio, a long series of CD releases and workshops, the orchestra has established itself as an important institution in Danish musical life. Founded in 1945 Randers Kammerorkester was founded in 1945. Under Lavard Friisholm's many years of leadership the orchestra became a fixture in Danish musical life. Classical concerts in Randers, castle concerts and lunchtime concerts on Danmarks Radio were among the orchestra's most important hallmarks in that period. Core ensemble Lavard Friisholm led the orchestra right up until 1981, when he was succeeded by Jesper Grove Jørgensen, under whom the orchestra was restructured in 1986 as a core ensemble. The Czech violinist Milan Vitek took over the leadership of the orchestra in 1989, and with him as conductor Randers Kammerorkester and Det jyske Ensemble together formed Den danske Sinfonietta, which existed until 1992. Since 1993 the Scottish-born conductor David Riddell has been artistic and administrative director of Randers Kammerorkester. From Nuuk to Guangzhou Based at the music and theatre house Værket, where the orchestra plays around twenty subscription concerts (orchestral and chamber concerts) each season, Randers Kammerorkester also has extensive touring activity. The orchestra has thus performed in China, Russia, Greenland, Iceland, Estonia, Syria, Italy, Scotland, Norway and Sweden, among other places. In June 2013, June 2016 and June 2018 the Chamber Orchestra took part in the internationally acclaimed St. Magnus Festival in the Orkney Islands in northern Scotland. The Chamber Orchestra has also taken part in the Oundle International Festival and the Cambridge Summer Music Festival. Randers Kammerorkester also plays a long series of concerts within Denmark's borders and took part, among other things, in May 2005 in the festival of the Danish core ensembles, Basic Classics, in Copenhagen.
